March 11, 2024:
Congratulations everyone!
Being a Distinguished Chapter for 4 years in a row places our chapter among the Top 10 USAFA AOG chapters in the country. What does that mean? : You, the grads of Central OK have taken pride in not only supporting each other through various chapter social events, but also by giving back to your community through participation in worthy service events and philanthropy.
Going forward, I think we can do even better. One of the goals that your board members have adopted for 2024 and beyond is a commitment to engage more with younger grads, current cadets, and cadet candidates. This engagement can take many different forms, and our Academy is made better by any and all of them. Many of us are concerned about some of the changes taking place at our Academy and in the AOG itself. As we learned during our years there, USAFA's history is full of change. Our role as members of the Long Blue Line is to be an example of the constants and traditions that are so important to us such as continuing to live the Air Force's core values every day and helping to mold the future of the Long Blue Line by planting seeds of Air Force service in the youth of Oklahoma.
I look forward to hearing YOUR ideas and working with you on defining how you want to make positive impacts. Please join us at the 2024 Founders Day event that will be on April 20th, 2024 starting at 1:00 @ the Iron Star Urban BBQ Heritage Room, 3700 N Shartel in OKC. Guest speaker is Lt Gen (Ret) Donald J. Wetekam. There we will have a chance to celebrate our heritage (the 70th anniversary of our founding) and each other, as well as informally discuss any and all ideas you have for future initiatives. Invitations will be sent shortly.
Sincerely,
Lee Curtis '85

Fellow Zoomies,
Here are the minutes from our monthly luncheon and Board Meeting at the All American diner in Midwest City on Feb 23rd.
Meeting commenced at approximately 1140L. Attendees: Frank Alberga, Lee Curtis, John Justice, Jim Putnam, Jeff Wagner, David Wilson (by phone) and Rick Dunham (‘73)
Lee Curtis welcomed everyone. Jeff Wagner provided the financial status stating the current balance of $2108.04. Lee Curtis presented $100 for dues and donation at the meeting bringing the current total to $2208.04. Matt Waldron previously sent an Email reminding the board that the annual fee for YAMM was due in February for $25. The subscription was extended another year. YAMM enables the Chapter to interact with members in emails requiring responses. The remainder of the business discussion was provided by Lee Curtis with a synopsis of the upcoming changes to the Distinguished Chapter Program.
Distinguished Chapter Criteria:
New leadership at the AOG running the Distinguished Chapter Program proposed retroactive changes to the program for 2023 during a quarterly Chapter Presidents Zoom meeting, but quickly received push back from the chapter Presidents for not including them in any part of the discussion. Those changes were rolled back but will be implemented starting in 2024. Lee Curtis was instrumental in coordinating this action.
New Criteria: Lee presented the new criteria from a set of briefing slides. One of the biggest changes is aimed at the newest alumni, requiring a Chapter to have a “Young Alumni Advisor” that is a Chapter Officer. At this point, Lee nominated his daughter, Angie Curtis, to be our Young Alumni Advisor until we can recruit one from the local area. Jim Putnam seconded the nomination. The board members present, including David Wilson, unanimously approved the nomination.
Lee continued to present the other requirements outlined in the briefing slides. He can make them available to anyone who wishes to review them. For the other required areas outlined, our Chapter should not have any problems reaching the Distinguished Chapter for 2024.
David Wilson expressed the need for the AOG and our Chapter to do more to promote/assist with career development for our younger graduates. The members present agreed but tabled discussion on ways to accomplish this until another meeting.
Founders Day:
The board members present agreed to pursue a Founders Day event at Iron Star BBQ on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 1300. Frank Alberga agreed to be Project Officer. Iron Star cost per person is $30. The board recommended charging $10 each for members and $20 each for non-members and guests. We will receive a $400 partial reimbursement from the AOG for having the event (as we have in the past).
Guest speakers will be contacted. Based on the suggestions of the member present, Gen (ret) Robin Rand, Oklahoma Aerospace and Defense Innovation Institute Executive Director, is the first choice. Col Abigail Ruschetta, 72nd Air Base Wing Commander is the second choice and Brigadier General Chris Hill, former Commander, OKC Air Logistics Complex is the third choice.
The meeting was adjourned at 1300L.
Respectfully,
Jeff Wagner ‘86

3 Academies Rub Shoulders at Social Capital
The initial OKC Joint Service social was a great time at Social Capital on Feb 1, 2024! Six USAFA AOG people attended along with 5 Navy people and 10 Army grads. Totally absent was any interservice rivalry--just great conversation with fellow grads from West Point and Annapolis. The beer on tap list at Social Capital was the longest I've seen in OKC and the pub grub was delicious!
Attending were Lee '85 and Lisa Curtis, Frank '91 and Renee Alberga, John Justice '65, and David Wilson '74. The next joint social planned will be on Feb 22nd at a TBD location. The location may switch from Social Capital due to the fact that there is a Thunder home game that night versus the LA Clippers. Downtown will be packed for that event!

Chapter Donates to Deserving Community Friends
Here are photos of the Chapter's holiday donations. President Lee Curtis presented two checks to support Oklahoma City families and neighbors that needed a boost. $250 went to the Regional Food Bank and the Tinker Family Readiness Fund on December 22nd, 2023.
Of note for the Regional Food Bank donation, due to a matching contribution by a corporate donor, our donation funded 2,000 meals to hungry Oklahoma children and families! Shown in the picture with Lee Curtis is Chan Klingensmith, a Oklahoma Regional Food Bank Development Officer.
The Tinker Family Readiness Fund is the non-profit adjunct of the Tinker Airman and Family Readiness Center. This separate organization allows Tinker to provide for a wider range of support options for military families in need, to include not just food, clothing, and home goods, but also emergency cash loans and grants as needed. Shown in the picture with Lee are President: Mike Tyson, Secretary: James Mosshammer, and Treasurer: April Railey.

Wreaths Across America, Dec 17 at Fairlawn Cemetery
Seasons Greetings fellow Zoomies!
No Christmas season would be complete without participating in Wreaths Across America! It was a gorgeous and sunny, late fall day in Stillwater, OK. The remembrance service was meaningful and poignant with a bagpipe procession, 21 gun salute, guest speaker, taps, and the laying of wreaths by the Guthrie Jr ROTC unit honoring every uniformed service. Our Chapter was among a number of other community service organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, American Legion and the VFW.
As the Wreaths Across America organization reminded us, there are two deaths we all will face. The first is the death of our physical bodies. The second is when your name is no longer remembered or spoken. The assembled volunteers laid a wreath on every veteran's grave, and upon laying the wreath, each volunteer stated the veteran's name and thanked them for their service, followed by a salute by those who wore, or still wear the uniform. Some of the graves that our chapter decorated dated back to veterans of the Civil War. A day of remembrance well spent.
At the same time as the Wreaths Across America event was happening in Stillwater, three wreaths that our Chapter funded were laid in a similar ceremony at the USAFA Cemetery. These wreaths were laid in honor of the memory of 3 Central Oklahoma USAFA grads who passed on in 2023: Walt "Mike" Givens '59, Leroy Stutz '63, and Gordy Bendick, 73. Here's a toast...
Many thanks go to the chapter members who were able to make it to this year's event: Board member Frank Alberga and his wife Renee, Chris Hill and his wife Kelly, and chapter president Lee Curtis.

30 Nov Meeting and Chapter 2023 Wrap Up and Plans for 2024
Attendees: Lee Curtis (85), John Justice (65), Mick Brannan (84), Frank Alberga (91), Lance Reynolds (93), Dave Casson (98)
1. All Board Members and Officers volunteered to serve for another year with no challenges, so motion was recorded and passed for the 2024 calendar year. See Chapter Leadership
2. 16 Dec -- Wreaths Across America We will be volunteering to assist in laying Christmas wreaths on veterans graves at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. Ceremony start time is at 1030, followed by wreath laying throughout the cemetery. We should be finished by noon. This has been a very rewarding experience every year we have done this, starting in 2020. An email with directions and signups will be coming out soon. Our chapter bought 3 wreaths to be laid at the USAFA cemetery to honor the 3 OK grads who passed in 2023. A solemn salute goes out to our fellow Oklahoma grads: Mike Givens ('59), Leroy Stutz ('64), and Gordon Bendick.
3. Dues for 2024 -- 20 people have signed up so far as members for the 2024 calendar year. In 2023, the chapter had 42 members, so there are still several current members who have not yet taken the opportunity to rejoin for 2024. Please consider joining by clicking on the link below to our Chapter website. Dues are used to help defray the cost of social activities throughout the year (members get extra benefits such as free drinks at select events!) as well as providing support to local charities supporting the troops and the Oklahoma community.

4. Proposed 2024 Events:
Headliner event: As always, that is Founders Day, which is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 13th, 2024. We had 40 attendees at the 2023 Founders Day and had a wonderful time celebrating our heritage. This year will mark the 70 year anniversary of the founding of USAFA in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Volunteer focus: We would love to expand to a few more volunteer opportunities to help make us a chapter that truly makes a difference. Some tentative suggested activities are as follows: volunteering at the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank and the Hugs Project (packing care packages for deployed troops), visiting with our retired and disabled vets at the Norman Veterans Home, and other worthy activities. Please share your ideas!
Social activities: We also discussed possible social events for the coming year. In addition to the ever-popular football watch parties (we had 4 in 2023) and the annual Beer and Wine Social in June, attendees discussed other possibilities such as a family-oriented picnic at an area lake. The prospects are endless--we just need your ideas and interest to make your wishes a reality. Let us hear your thoughts!
5. Finally, our beloved Falcon football team suffered a number of key injuries late in the season and as a result, lost their last 4 games after a sterling 8-0 start and a Top 25 ranking. Thanks to that heady start though, Air Force ended up bowl-eligible and were selected to play for the second straight year in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth on Saturday, Dec 23rd versus #24 James Madison University. Last year's game versus Baylor was a brutally cold affair with a 1900 kickoff. Several chapter members braved those temperatures in the teens and cheered the Falcons to victory. This year's game will have a 1430 kickoff time. With the unpredictable Oklahoma/North Texas weather, we could also enjoy gorgeous weather as we did in 2022 in the Service Pro First Responders Bowl versus Louisville (another AF victory!) when the weather was in the 80s and sunny. Please let us know if you are interested in attending so we can perhaps coordinate a carpool convoy to make it a day trip.
GO AIR FORCE, BEAT THE DUKES!
Here's to a great 2024! If you would like to provide feedback or share your thoughts and ideas, please reply to this email or feel free to text me at my cell # (405)361-0286. The chapter officers and board members want to provide an environment that helps instill pride in being a USAFA graduate and enable each of you to continue serving in a meaningful way, as well as enjoy the camaraderie of your classmates and fellow Zoomies!

Falcons Stop Navy; CSU Oct 28, then Army Nov 4
AF vs Army watch party upcoming Nov 4; see our bid to win the Commanders In Chief's Trophy. Stay tuned here for more details, upcoming volunteer activities and the All-Academy Military Ball from our luncheon meeting today.
We had a GREAT time at Industry Gastro Pub during AFA's beat down of Navy. AF controlled the game but let Navy squeeze out a touchdown at the end of the game for a 17-6 victory. We are 1/2 way home to another Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, a 7-0 record and now ranked #19 in the nation! If Air Force remains undefeated, they would likely be selected to play in the FIesta Bowl on New Year's Day as the highest ranked Group of 6 team. Now that's worth rooting for!!
The Industry Gastro Pub proved to have great food and service, which was a perfect complement to game watching, friendly conversation and good natured ribbing. The chapter sponsored a few door prizes and a few lucky people walked away with cool t-shirts. Dave Wilson generously donated some holographic AF stadium cups as well. We will be holding our watch party once again at the Industry Gastro Pub for AF-Army game 4 Nov at 1330 (more to follow).

Hello everyone!
The Central Oklahoma Chapter of the USAFA AOG held its September monthly meeting at the All-American Diner at 1130 hours on 9/29/2023. Present at the meeting were the following members:
Lee Curtis '85, Chapter President
David Wilson '74, Vice President
Chris Havenridge '84, Board Chairman
John Justice '65, Board member
Jim Putnam '72, Board member
Sandy Sanderson '74
Lee Curtis welcomed everyone and after everyone enjoyed their diner favorites, provided the Treasurer's Report from Jeff Wagner. Balance stands at $2,302.14 with no outstanding credits or debits.
Next item of business was planning for this fall's Falcon Football watch parties, an important social element to the chapter's charter. The first watch party of the season was the Utah State game on September 20th, where attendees enjoyed a big Falcons victory, 39-21. Now that the team is 5-0 and on top of the standings in the Mountain West Conference (!), each opportunity to cheer on our beloved Falcons is potentially part of a record year for the team. Here are the currently scheduled watch parties:
- Oct 14, 6:00 pm vs Wyoming at The Garage Burgers and Beer, near Sooner and I-40 in Del City; hosted by Linda Sverdrup, '85. Please RSVP with Linda @ 916-995-4433.
- Oct 21, 11:00 am vs Navy (current record 2-3), location is TBD, hosted by Chris Havenridge
- Nov 4, 1:30 pm vs Army (current record 2-3), location is TBD, hosted by Frank Alberga. We are hoping to plan a joint watch party with the local West Point chapter. Lee Curtis played a golf tournament with a USMA 2016 grad who is supposed to hook us up.
NOTE: Depending on the upcoming results, there could be more viewing opportunities in December for the Mountain West Championship game and subsequent bowl game.
Lee Curtis reported that the date for this year's All-Academy Military Ball is December 29, 2023 at the Oklahoma city Golf And Country Club. This year it is the USAFA Parents Club's responsibility to organize and host the ball for all Oklahoma cadets/midshipmen and their families from the five service academies (Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine), which is an expensive endeavor. Based on the Treasurer's report, a motion was made to make a donation to the Ball. John Justice moved to donate $500, making our AOG Chapter a one-star donor and receiving recognition in the program. All in attendance were in approval and the motion was carried.
Next was discussion regarding volunteer service opportunities for the Fall. A number of opportunities were discussed, including the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, Wreaths Across America at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater OK, and the Hugs Project. The members present voted to choose two: the Hugs Project and Wreaths Across America. Jim Putnam's wife is very active with the Hugs Project, so Jim volunteered to coordinate with her to identify when and where this will take place. More information to follow. Lee Curtis volunteered to coordinate our involvement with the Wreaths Across America, which will be on Dec 16th at 1000 hours (Save the date!).
Meeting was adjourned at 1245 hrs. Next meeting will be on October 27th @ 1130 hours at the All-American Diner, 212 S. Air Depot Blvd in Midwest City.

Chapter Starts Fall Activities with Football Watch Party
Greetings Fellow Falcon fans!
Our beloved Falcons are off to a fast start again this season--4-0 as of this date. This week's game is a Mountain West matchup at home on Saturday, 9/30 versus San Diego State (2-3). Air Force is favored by 10.5 points and the game will be broadcast at 7:00 pm on CBS Sports Network. Go Air Force--Beat the Aztecs!
Your Chapter kicked off the Watch Party season in style at The Garage Burgers and Beer in Del City. The Garage were fantastic hosts with the game displayed on 4 big screens and the audio of the game playing over all the restaurant speakers. Air Force hosted Utah State on a beautiful evening at Falcon Stadium. The first half was especially exciting to watch as Air Force sprinted to a 29-0 lead before the Aggies finally scored with under 2 minutes left in the half. The final score of 39-21 was never in doubt, much to the enjoyment of the attendees.
Perhaps the most exciting news of the night though was not the game, but rather the news of the engagement of Frank Alberga '93 to his long-time girlfriend Renee Aston. Congratulations to the two of you!
Here is a picture of those who enjoyed the night's festivities, from left to right: Renee Aston, Lisa Thames, John Justice '65, Chris Havenridge '84, Daniel Havenridge, Lee Curtis '85, and Frank Alberga '93.

July Chapter Luncheon Meeting Minutes
Chapter Board member John Justice raises angora goats on a ranch in Harrah, OK. He and his wife Dee have been raising angora goats, the source of mohair, the diamond fiber, for over three decades. There is only one major show and sale left for these fine animals and john participated recently as he has done for many years in the Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association. You might call him the best GOAT raiser of the show, maybe of all time because his entries were dominant and his goats are raised with special love and care.
Pictured is a yearling buck, first in the show class and grand champion of the overall show. In the yearling doe class the Justice goat won 4th place. In the yearling buck class the Oklahoman placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th out of 45 goats. In the yearling doe class it was 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 7th, with 3 others in the top 15, out of 45 goats again. |
Attendees: John Justice *, Frank Alberga, Richard Sandwick, Lee Curtis, Jim Putnam. Lance Reynolds & Chris Havenridge
1. Meeting: The Chapter held its monthly meeting at the Black Bear Diner, near Quail Springs Mall on Friday, June 23rd with seven attendees. Delicious food and stories of Jim Putnam's world travels were the highlights of the day. There's nothing like a two-week South Pacific tour of Tahiti and Polynesia and then an extended European river cruise to spark a flurry of photos and memories. Well done Jim and Billie! Soon after the meeting started, a severe thunderstorm hit the area with monsoon rains that kept the meeting going over its normal time to avoid getting soaked. Gotta love that Oklahoma weather... 2. Calling for a Volunteer! Your chapter is looking for someone who would be willing to serve as the chapter Community Services/Outreach coordinator. The role would be to interface with the organizations the chapter partners to set up dates and times for specific events, and coordinate sign-ups to attend future volunteer service events. Our charter includes both social and service components that are vital to help make a difference in the lives of those around us. Some volunteer events we've done in the past include the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank, the Oklahoma Blood Institute (the Chapter has several regular donors!), and Wreaths Across America at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. If you are interested or would like to know more about this opportunity, please respond to this email or contact Lee Curtis by text @ 405-361-0286. 3. Social: The most popular part of our social calendar revolves around our beloved Falcon football schedule. Seven of the games are at night this year, thanks to three straight 10 game winners in full seasons (one of only 6 FBS schools with that distinction--sorry OU!) It would be a great help to have an organizer/host for a handful of different games, perhaps 4 or 5 total. The chapter has plenty of "swag" from the USAFA AOG Gift Shop to give away for door prizes to make it even more fun! We couldn't keep straight if Dave Wilson was in Europe this week or hanging out with pygmies so Casa de Dave Wilson was volunteered for later in the season. Please reply to this email if you would like to organize/host one of the below choices. Sep 15: vs Utah State @ 1900 on CBSSN Sep 30 vs San Diego State @ 1900 Sat night on CBSSN Oct 14 vs Wyoming @ 1800 Sat night on CBSSN Oct 21 @ Navy, 1100 on CBS -- this would be a great opportunity for a joint event with the Navy AOG chapter. Would likely be able to hold this at Deep Deuce Grill or the Garage to accommodate a large crowd. Oct 28 @ CSU, 1800 Saturday night on CBSSN Nov 4 vs Army at Mile High Stadium in Denver (1330; CBSSN...really, not CBS); some members are already planning to attend the game live, but this is another joint opportunity to watch with our West Point brethren. Nov 11 @ Hawaii (Lee and Lisa Curtis will be in Hawaii for the game) Nov 18 vs UNLV @ 1430 on CBSSN Nov 24 @ Boise State, Friday afternoon 3:00 pm on Fox Sports1 (battle on the smurf turf!) 4. All-Academy Military Ball: This year's event will be hosted by the USAFA Parents Club of Oklahoma. Save the date--Saturday, December 30th at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. The chapter has historically supported this event for our Oklahoma cadets and have even filled a table with AOG attendees. A great chance to squeeze into that mess dress one more time! 5. Long Blue Line Leadership Conference: Formerly known as the USAFA AOG Chapter Presidents Conference, this year's meeting will be on July 27th and will include AOG Board members, Class scribes, and Affinity Group leaders. Our chapter president, Lee Curtis, will be attending for the chapter. Please contact Lee at lcurtis@midwesthose.com if you have any issues you would like him to address on your behalf. Your issues and concerns are what the conference is all about, so please share! 6. No LUNCHEONs Jul/Aug. Have a great summer! See you at a football watch party this Fall, and look forward to hearing some great travel stories at our next chapter luncheon on Sep 29th, location and time TBD. Lee Curtis, Central OK AOG Chapter President |
3rd Annual Wine & Beer Social in Edmond,June 3rd, 2023
Greetings everyone!
On June 3rd, your chapter enjoyed another iteration of its traveling late Spring wine and beer party in downtown Edmond. The group converged in leisurely fashion, befitting a warm later Spring afternoon first on the wine portion of the event at 1884 at the Railyard.
On June 3rd, your chapter enjoyed another iteration of its traveling late Spring wine and beer party in downtown Edmond. The group converged in leisurely fashion, befitting a warm later Spring afternoon first on the wine portion of the event at 1884 at the Railyard.
Attendees included Lee Curtis '85 and his wife Lisa, Mike Grimes '84 and his wife Michell, Curt Wagner '90 and his wife Susan, Jeff Wagner '86 and his wife Debi (a mini Wagner family reunion!), Linda Sverdrup '85, and Frank Alberga '91 and Renee Alton. The cornerstone of Edmond's Railyard food district, 1884 at the Railyard is an open and airy space with cozy couches, love seats, and chairs complemented with an eclectic collection of coffee and end tables for a casual, artsy feel. This contributed to a comfortable and lively conversation groups. The friendly staff was welcoming and kept the beverages flowing seamlessly. Besides the excellent wines, the hit of the wine party was the three charcuterie trays provided by your chapter president's bride, Lisa. The trays were heaping with healthy selections of fruit, vegetables, meats and cheeses, and crackers. Fun fact: through conversations over wine, I discovered that Jeff and Curt Wagner, as well as Lee Curtis all entered the Academy after graduating from high schools in Western NY--Go Bills!
Altogether too soon it seemed, it was time to proceed. There was so much to enjoy that the group happily carried a tray and a half of the food on the short walk (crawl?) to the second leg of the event, Frenzy Brewing Company.

Greetings all graduate alumni in OK from your new chapter President Lee Curtis '85. Many thanks to President Chris Havenridge, who started the chapter almost four years ago, for leading and guiding us to a full-fledged and active chapter. He kept us in touch with what's going on with the 'long blue line', old and new, near and far-- and brought us face-to-face with watch parties and many other gatherings.
As we continue to move forward as a Chapter, we have the opportunity to continue to serve and make a difference. This is a part of why we all chose to attend the Academy and serve in the Air Force. We have been blessed serving our great nation and as alumni, we owe it to those who follow and our surrounding communities to give something back. We will continue to have fun together through our social events. With everyone's support, we can help enrich our world with our time and energy also as we seek new volunteer opportunities. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas!

Lee Curtis, '85
President Central OK Chapter
Detailed meeting minutes follow:
- The board accepted the resignation of Chris Havenridge as President of the Central OK Chapter after almost 4 years of excellent service. Chris will remain a chapter director and Lee Curtis will step into his shoes as the new president.
- The current board members elected to maintain their positions as did the Chapter Secretary Lance Reynolds and Network Coordinator Matt Waldron who were both present. The Board approved the continuation of these appointments for 2023. Vice president David Wilson and Secretary Jeff Wagner were not present. See board and officer updates and photos Here . New member Linda Sverdrup was also at the meeting and volunteered to help with chapter activities and maintenance of the chapter website. She is new to Oklahoma and is opening a systems management consulting firm. See her company Web Page.
- Our new President Lee Curtis was prominent in organizing many of 2022’s activities and said he will put up a new slate soon. Please respond with your desires for what to do in 2023. Work has begun on planning Founder’s Day for 2023, celebrating the creation of the Academy 1 April, 1954. See News and Photos of what we did in 2022 here. https://www.centralok.usafachapters.org/news-and-photos.html
- Our chapter collects dues to finance our many activities and charity contributions. Names of members who pay dues are shown here https://www.centralok.usafachapters.org/member-directory.html (you may pay by using the link on that page). Only 10 of approximately 50 current members have paid their 2023 dues and a separate email will be forthcoming extending the deadline to pay and encouraging “regular” dues-paying membership. Dues are requested only from alumni that graduated at least 15 classes ago. However, all alumni can participate in Chapter events. The dues are placed in a Chapter checking account maintained by the Treasurer.
- Though charitable donations are normally made during the holiday season the board approved upcoming donations of about $100 to the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank and the Tinker AFB Readiness Center to support family needs of Tinker airmen. Lee said he would work with the Treasurer, Jeff Wagner, to carry out these donations soon.
- Outgoing President Chris Havenridge attended the AOG 2022 President's conference Nov 2-3 in Dallas ,TX. His notes will be forthcoming in an email. He also submitted a Distinguished Chapter nomination for 2022 to USAFA Association of Graduates. The Central OK chapter has won this award the last two years.
Seasons Greetings and Wreaths 2022 at Fairlawn Cemetery
Let us remember those who are alone or suffering during the holidays. Reach out to them if you can. If you are one of these, remember that this is just a phase, a season of life and we all go through ups and downs. May your future be bright! Make it so.
Lee '85 and Lisa Curtis were there, as well as David '98 and Amy Casson and Linda '85 Sverdrup. Photos below. I caught up with them and was honored to lay one of the last wreaths at a veteran's resting place. We would lay the wreath, state their name, salute, and thank them for their service. Two of my sons were there with me, and hope they were moved by our appreciation of these great and humble veterans who have sacrificed for our national security.
(There was at least one family from the Parents Club (parents of USAFA cadets) who participated, but I did not catch up with them. Therefore, lacking their consent, they'll be anonymous for this report)

What we did was assemble “back pack” bags for kids-in-need to take home from school. It was an assembly line. John ‘65 pulled and opened a bag, and put in some shelf stable milk, Lisa put in juice and puddings, Matteo-animal crackers, Tina-Applesauce and PBJ, Chris ‘84 - cereal and pretzels. Linda ‘85 did the QA by weight, and Lee ‘85 sealed each bag with heat.
There was music playing so we danced a little, like no one was looking, ‘cuz no one was.
Including our team, there were 7 assembly lines working, and altogether we bagged 3,600 backpack bags in less than 2 hours.
Then we went for a delicious lunch at the Hibachi Buffet. On I-240. Lee’s very impressive daughter, Angie ‘17, joined us for lunch. Angie drove up from Altus, where she is attending C-17 Instructor Pilot school.

Special thanks to newlyweds Lee and Lisa, (on their 3 week anniversary ) for coordinating this effort. Lee is my vote for Chapter MVP this year. He’s our liaison with the OK USAFA Parents Club. He coordinated our participation in the cadet send-off in June; he also hosted our beer and wine social in June, and he and Lisa show up and have a great time in just about every chapter event. Awesome people!

Navy Air Force Academy Grads Watch Air Force Win late with Ground Score
|
Haziq Daniels to David Cormier (#7 in white jersey) on 3rd play of Navy game
|
In the 4th quarter Daniels clinched the win for the Falcons (4-1) with an 18-yard scamper on third-and-6 in Navy territory, allowing them to run out the clock and win 13 - 10. This was soon after Matthew Dapore connected on a 22-yard field goal with 4:14 left to give Air Force the lead.
Oklahoma grads of both academies renewed the rivalry and watched the Falcons end strong Oct 1st for the victory.
We had a great crowd for the Navy game at the Sunset Patio Bar! There was a lot of space. Service was very good, and the food was great. Fast, Neat, Average, Friendly, Good, Good! Definitely a place for future get-togethers.
Apologies for the lateness of this report, it has been a really busy weekend-week-weekend stretch for me. After the Navy game, we hosted a party at our house for work friends, Sunday was family time, long hours at work, and Band parent duties, fixin' cars, you know how it is.
I counted 15 grads and guests, including 3.5 Navy fans: Curt Wagner, ‘90 and his Susan have a midshipman sophomore, so she was wearing Navy gear, and Curt was wearing both AF Falcon and Navy fan apparel. . That makes 1.5 Navy fans so far ... and we were joined by USNA grads Tim '83 and Mike '77, which makes the total 3.5 Navy fans.. Mike and Tim are great guys from the Navy and Marines, who are hoping to join in with us for future events..
Also enjoying the camaraderie were Lisa '07 and Luke Elmore, Lisa ‘07 with Nate ’06 Herd, Paul Motley '73, Mechelle with Mike (Salt) Grimes '84, Lisa with Lee '85 Curtis, and Tina with (me) Chris '84 Havenridge.
A special shout out to Jeff Wagner '86, our chapter treasurer, whom we haven't seen for a few weeks. He's a very successful marathon runner, who raced in the TCS London (UK) Marathon on October 2nd. I heard he came in 5th place. That's a major big deal, he worked and prepared for it for months. This year he's run at Ogden, Missoula, OKC, BOSTON, and I don't know what else. And, he can run a 5K in 20 minutes. All that is just amazing to me. SA-Lute!
Football talk:
I was able to watch some of the AF-Utah State game on Oct 8. We were ahead at halftime, but they got us in the end, 27-34... second loss of the season.
The stats are now: 1-2 in the Mountain West Mountain Conference (sic), 4-2 overall, 4-0 at home, 0-2 away,
Either way, we had a better day than OU vs. TX, oh my.
Next week (Oct 15 at 9:30 PM central): Falcons at UNLV. UNLV is also 4-2 overall, and I predict it will be our next victory. We're not going to host a watch party at this late hour, but please let us know if some of you want to have a watch party, and we will be glad to get the word out. (Let us know the location in advance!)
Boise State at Air Force, October 22 at 6 PM: Sounds perfect for the next party... Who wants to host? Any inputs on the venue? Should be a good match up, Boise State is the one to beat, they are 3-0 in the conference.
The next game after that, Nov 5, is the big one for the Commander in Chief's trophy, in Arlington TX (see separate email). Many Central Oklahoma chapter members (me too!) will be attending. There are still tickets available, you should get a pair (that didn't sound right, but i'll keep moving on).
Other upcoming events:
The next Noon Meal Formation is scheduled for October 28 at 11:30. It's always a good time, very relaxed, come join us! Personally, I am scheduled to be on business travel that entire week, but the show must go on.
I will be representing us at the Chapter Presidents Conference in Dallas, November 2-3, I'm sure to bring back some good ideas for the future of our chapter, and maybe a little swag. Wish me safe travels, it will be a busy next few weeks.

By the way,
Shout out to Mike ‘59, who attends most of our events. I’m not revealing how young he is, you do the math :). If you want to meet a really interesting member of the very first class, and hear about life when the world was in black and white (<~ attempted humor) get over here next time!

Class of '59: first day and the shape-up begins at Lowry
The group relived some tales of cadet life, including marching tours, the dreaded Form 10 and confinements. We had a more serious, but positive, discussion about diversity over the years at our alma mater. Also, cadet cars, and being caught with owning one before you were allowed to. And guys that were married before graduation. This was a fun break from the work-week for me, and a relaxing kick off for the weekend.
Community Service: Lee took the action to arrange a volunteer event at the regional food bank for the chapter. Thanks Lee! As Oklahoma children head back to school, hunger remains a constant for many.

Joint Navy Watch Party: Chris has been talking to the squid… I mean the contact for the USNA grads in the area, and we are close to finalizing the venue near downtown OKC. Possibly 10th street this time… not announcing yet. Kickoff 01OCT at 1100. Be ready to do some end zone push-ups. Sliced cheese optional. (Ask an ‘80’s grad if that’s not a thing for you)
vs Last Matchup Sep. 11, 2021 with Air Force 23 to Navy 3.

Dues are coming up for grads who want to be members. We are sticking to the reduced rate of $25, $10, or $zero, depending on years since graduation. Click to Pay Dues Now or Make a Donation to the Chapter
(One member paid us $50 for dues last week, I know who you are, we will make it right)
Seriously, it’s the cost of a lunch. It goes toward minimal chapter expenses and donations to local and veterans charities. Non member grads have never been excluded from any activity (except voting) since our founding way-way back in 2019. (I never was much of a salesman).

Ok City Grads Watch Wyoming Come from Behind to Edge Air Force Friday, 16 Sept, 2022
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) Titus Swen ran for 102 yards and a late fourth-quarter touchdown to give Wyoming a 17-14 victory over Air Force in a Mountain West Conference opener on Friday night. Air Force (2-1, 0-1), which entered leading the nation averaging 508.5 yards rushing, was held to 171 yards on the ground. John Lee Eldridge III carried 13 times for 104 yards. Haaziq Daniels threw a pair of touchdown passes for Air Force. Daniels lofted a pass from near the midfield logo to Cade Harris in the end zone that gave the Falcons a 14-10 lead with about 10 minutes left. Daniels connected with David Cormier inside the 10 midway through the third. Air Force had won two straight in the series, each at home, but has lost four straight in Laramie dating to 2012.
Chapter President Chris Havenridge hosted about 20 local grads at the Deep Deuce Grill near Bricktown in OK City. ...................................President’s comments: First of all, I realize the party started out a little rough, the place was crowded in the beginning. But we did have our own space by 8 PM and it turned out to be a great time! After things settled down, the staff at the Deuce took good care of us, with great food and plenty of cold drinks. A toast to the youngest grad in attendance: Jake Branham ‘22, who is pulling recruiter duty while waiting for his reporting date for pilot training! And to the eldest grad, John Justice, '65, who's living the good life on his farm, and joins us every time he is able to finish the chores. Special salute to the class of '06: great to see so many of you come to the party! We even had a (possible) future cadet in diapers, son of Dana '14 and Devin. Always happy to see new faces!... please continue to join in, and please tell us your ideas for more fun activities and ways we can serve the community as a group.

Recap of Recent Chapter Events since Dec 2021
Brothers Jeff (1986) and Curt (1990) Wagner, and wives, Debi (left) and Susan (right), represented Central OK Chapter and USAFA at the All Academies Ball on December 30th, 2021. Current Oklahoma cadets from the military service academies, their parents, graduates from the academies, and invited guests celebrate the holidays each Dec to jointly celebrate military service and unity of purpose.
Each service member may bring one guest. Also, the guest can be a date, a spouse, or a girlfriend/boyfriend. The ball is a solemn occasion with military traditions but also a holiday social event, with fun for all with laughter and and dancing.
It was a nice evening hosted by the Naval Academy Parents Club. The Honorable Jim Bridenstine, NASA's 13th Administrator, was the guest speaker and regaled us with stories from his time serving in the Navy.
Next year West Point Parents are the hosts followed by our Air Force chapter in 2023.

Founders' Day 2022
Celebrated April 31, 2022. Central OK Chapter President Chris Havenridge addresses chapter members, spouses, and friends at Toby Keith's This Bar and Grill, Oklahoma City. This is the Chapter's 3rd gathering for Founders' Day, the first being in 2019, the first event for the fledgling chapter, the next was scheduled for Top Golf in 2020 but was cancelled due to COVID. The 2nd was last year, a gathering at Charleston's in Bricktown with Academy superintendent Lt Gen Clark, piped in via a Zoom call from his home at the Academy. Each year, Founders' Day recalls the U.S Air Force Academy's establishment April 1, 1954. The creation was the culmination of an idea years in the making. Airpower leaders, long before the Air Force was a separate service, argued that they needed a school dedicated to training Airmen and officer leaders for the future.

Last year, General Clark, USAFA Superintendent, delivered a most informative and enjoyable presentation over Zoom. It was a hybrid event: A Zoom call for those who opted to stay socially distant, plus about 16 grads, guests, and parents of cadets in a private room in a restaurant.
This year, we plan to go: all in-person, with great food, fun and fellowship! Be there!
Again, Happy New Year,
Wishing you continued health, prosperity, and all good things to come your way in 2022 and beyond.

Chapter Update/ Watch Party at Deep Deuce Grill 26 Nov 21: USAFA defeats UNLV 48-14 to end season at 9 - 3
Wreaths across America: We purchased 6 wreaths for placement at the Academy Cemetery. On December 18, 2021 at 10am MST, Wreaths Across America will be at the USAF Academy Cemetery to Remember and Honor our veterans through the laying of Remembrance Wreaths on the graves of our country's fallen heroes and the act of saying the name of each and every veteran aloud.
Holiday Donations:
Due to the generosity of dues-paying members, and several generous donations to the Central Oklahoma Chapter, we were able to donate funds to several caring agencies this holiday season!
$100 each to: Wounded Warrior Project, Red Andrews Christmas Dinner, Regional Food Bank, Wreaths Across America (for placement of wreaths at USAFA) and Tinker AFB Airman's Food Pantry.
Football: Friday after Thanksgiving, we shook off our turkey comas and held a football feast. The Falcons played well, and flew to victory (I almost said "sailed").
But more importantly, we gathered with friends, old and new, and that's the main thing, right?
There were a couple of fun twists this time:
SWAG: The AOG had provided merchandise to the chapter, and we gave it away as door prizes. Everyone got a ticket, and everyone got a gift... there were AF logo sweatshirts, T-shirts, mugs, bottles, etc. My wife and I brought home USAFA athletic T-shirts, just like the one I was issued for BCT in 1980. (except a few sizes larger). Hey, I'm in shape. "Round" is a shape :)
Free Beer: The Chapter bought 2 drinks for each member (membership perks!). We also were prepared to issue drink tickets to any grad who earned their butter bars in the class of 2006 or later, but the youngest grad in attendance was from the class of '91!. Another surprising twist: an unrelated party enjoying the afternoon at the Deep Deuce Bar and Grill generously and anonymously donated $100 to our party, so the membership perks didn't cost the Chapter much at all! (I think they were impressed by an 84 year-old 1959 grad doing push ups, I certainly was!)
(Note: If this is the first time you are reading one of my updates, I don't want you to think we are just an old vets drinkin' club, we do other stuff and we are planning more. Watch parties are just part of the fun.)
Attendees: Chris '84 and Tina Havenridge, Matt Waldron '69, Steve '89 and Joan Winner, Walt '59 and Katy Givens, Paul Motley '73, Michael '84 and Mechille Grimes, Jim Putnam '72, Jeff Wagner '86, Frank Alberga '91, Lee Curtis '85 and Lisa, David Wilson '74

Watch parties at Deep Deuce (one is upcoming Friday for the Fighting Falcon's last regular season football game at 2:30 pm; join us!), a successful blood drive, and continuing monthly "Noon Meal Formation" luncheons fill in the activity list. Chapter volunteers can lay wreaths for veterans again this year on Dec 18 in Fairlawn cemetery in Stillwater (more info after Thanksgiving), supplementing the wreaths we purchased for graves at the Air Force Academy. Rounding out activities for this year is the All Service Cadet Xmas Ball sponsored by the Navy Parents Club on Dec 30. Ticket info is forthcoming. Next year's plans were discussed at length with the highlight again to be Founders Day. Sat, April 2nd, was chosen for the Founders Day celebration. We selected a project officer, discussed Chapter financial support, and nominated a prominent local guest speaker. The general format was established as a buffet or limited menu with a per-person ticket (not pay-as-you-go as we have done in the past). All the above are subject to change, per advice of the Founders Day project officer, as he builds the plan. Other activities discussed were a social event or picnic for families and children with emphasis on Young Alumni participation, another Wine and Beer tour, involvement with junior ROTC programs with guest speakers to talk about the Air Force Academy. Further planning on 2022 events and community involvement will be discussed at the next Chapter Noon Meal Formation which will be Jan 27.
1. Elections. Lee Curtis volunteered and was elected to the Board of Directors, filling the 5th board position left empty when former Secretary Kurt Steeby moved to Europe. Lance Reynolds volunteered and was elected to fill the empty Secretary position. Other Board and Officer positions remain the same. Click Chapter Leadership
2. Holiday donations from the Chapter were finalized. Cash donations were approved for donation to the Food Bank of OK, Red Andrews Xmas Dinner, Wounded Warriors, Tinker Airman's Pantry, and Wreaths across America for placement of wreaths at the Air Force Academy cemetery on Dec 18.
3. Treasurer's Report. Cash on hand over $2,400. Dues collection for calendar year 2022: 9 new regular members, 26 renewals, and 10 regular members who have not renewed yet. Deadline is 1 Dec. Holiday donation checks and payments are underway.

Chapter President's 23 Sept Meeting Notes: My assessment is that Bio Day was a success! I pretty much spoke off the cuff about the exciting moments of my career as tactical airlift navigator in C-141B and C-130 E and H aircraft. I air-dropped a lot of paratroops and equipment, and participated in several deployments, from Gitmo to Saudi. I could have told stories all day, but I passed the ball to Frank. Frank had some great stories to tell during his long career in procurement, including some time at the embassy in Iraq, and as a protocol officer for general staff. Lance also has a lot of stories to tell, as a project manager and commander.
We only had time for 3 bio's, so I recommend that we continue to go 'around the room' next time, and maybe the next time after that, until we hear from everyone who wants to talk. We've all had some unique experiences, and made sacrifices, and solid contributions, while serving. Probably speaking for all of us when I say, it's been an interesting life, so much more interesting than what most people have experienced. As I get less young in years, I get more appreciative of the privilege and honor that we share as Academy grads and USAF veterans!

Chapter 'Noon Meal Formation 28 Aug 21
Central Oklahoma Chapter, United States Air Force Academy Association of Graduates
There was a short business meeting followed by good food and great guys getting together because we like getting together with awesome people!
Recap of recent activities (Chris Havenridge):
We haven't had any chapter activities since June, (we already talked about the cadet send off, the brewery tour and wine tasting). Those were great fun and fellowship. We took July off. I suppose we needed to rest up for the upcoming watch parties.
Treasurer's Report:
Let's just say we are doing well, we have the same amount in the bank as last month... Dues are coming up towards the end of the year. We will talk about disbursing funds to worthy charities near the holidays, as we did last year.
Upcoming events: AF Navy game, 11SEP2021, kickoff: 1430
Location: Deep Deuce Grill, 307 NE 2nd St, Oklahoma City, OK 73104, David Wilson’74 is coordinating. Bring a friend or make a friend! We had a blast at previous parties! For those who prefer the virtual environment: Standby for Zoom info.
Discussion:
Walt Givens ‘59 passed around photocopies from one of the very first USAFA yearbooks.
Fascinating to see how some things have changed, and some things aren’t all that different! It’s an honor to have a member of the original class in our group… as it is an honor to connect with all our grads, with whom we have a unique bond.
We’ll get those photocopies posted, with a link for all to view. Please standby for that, as well. One photo of Walt below.
See photo below courtesy of a newcomer to our monthly gathering, David Casson ‘91. See you all at the game!

Chapter Celebrates Air Force Academy Founders Day, Sat, April 3, with Big Boost from Air Force Academy Superintendent Lt Gen Richard Clark
(Left Photo) Academy Superintendent Lt Gen Richard Clark, wife Amy, and daughter Zoey Sing Air Force Song after his swearing in ceremony Sept 23, 2020.
(Right Photo) Gen Clark uses Zoom call to tell OK grads and cadet parents on Apr 3, 2021 how he is guiding USAFA during challenging times. Presentation playback instructions are below. WATCH FULL ZOOM VIDEO BELOW See more photos from event HERE |
The Central OK Chapter of the Association of Graduates hosted a Founders Day 2021 celebration Saturday that brought camaraderie, togetherness, and current news about the on-going mission and status of the Air Force Academy. Academy superintendent Lt Gen Richard Clark spoke “live” from his home at the Academy to over 30 graduates and parents of cadets gathered in Bricktown, Oklahoma City and around the state via a Zoom connection on Saturday afternoon.
Founders Day. The annual event celebrated the birth of the Academy sixty-seven years ago — 1 April 1954 — when President Dwight Eisenhower signed Public Law 325, creating an Academy for the Air Force like the other service academies. Saturday’s event also marked the first in-person gathering for the chapter since early last spring due to COVID dangers. Monthly meetings and outings are in planning to resume again now.
Chapter Hybrid Event Breaks Ground. Chapter President Chris Havenridge and Vice David Wilson planned the celebration as a hybrid event with both in-person attendees at Charleston’s Restaurant in Bricktown and a Zoom connection to Colorado and Gen Clark for both in person and state-wide hook ins to an audio-visual connection via Zoom. Chris joined the Zoom Event in Bricktown with Gen Clark in CO, led the traditional toasting, including “To the Superintendent”, reviewed the Chapters efforts during the COVID period (see photos below), introduced Gen Clark for his remarks and closed the meeting.
Gen Clark Amazes. Gen Clark spoke and answered a variety of questions posed by grads and Academy parents for an hour. He spoke with enthusiasm and great knowledge about USAFA’s mission, its growth and diversity; the fight against COVID; and his pride in the accomplishments of the men and women of the cadet wing during a very harsh time. As the 21st superintendent he has been in place only 6 months but seems to have a strong grip on making the Academy a vibrant and forward-looking training ground for future Air Force officers.
“We’re All Up Here Together.” Diversity of the cadet population is now about 1/3 women and a slightly higher percentage for racial and ethnic minorities. Gen Clark encouraged everyone to watch the new Academy You Tube video: Dignity and Respect – USAFA: "We're All Up Here Together". The 4-minute video will leave a lump in your throat.
Gen Clarks Comments. Click link HERE to see full Zoom recording, including Gen Clark's clearly spoken views on Academy issues and answers to tough questions from attendees. The Zoom Access Passcode is k@$vUq&5. The video is provided by the AOG to be internally shared with chapter members. Advance the video 13:41 minutes to hear the informal conversation with Gen Clark and attendees before the official start of the program. Advance to 24:14 for official broadcast, including Gen Clarks remarks and Q & A session.
An overview of the topics he covered and questions he answered follow below:
1. Programs. New USAFA facilities and programs, including the Institute for Future Conflict, the Academy Center for Cyber Research, and the Academy Pandemic Math Team.
2. COVID shot success: 80% of cadets have volunteered and gotten their COVID shots as the immunization cannot be mandated while the Emergency Use Authorization for Vaccines for COVID-19 is still in effect. However, with continuing cadet education and expected protection from those who have had the infection, Gen Clark thinks it likely they are close to herd immunity in place at USAFA.
3. Back to Normal? The possibility of a return to normal activities looks bright. The Academy is planning a full up graduation for the class of 2021 with Thunderbirds performing and cadet guests and a more normal parents’ weekend to go along with recognition of the new class of 2025.
4. Face Problems Head On. The general answered forthrightly questions about Academy problems: sexual harassment and violence, honor code cheating violations during remote learning, and emphasized that Academy staff and leadership will deal harshly with crimes like sexual assault, violence, and egregious honor code violations. Cadets will continue training and leading their cadet peers to develop leadership skills to prepare them for the Air Force.
5. Honor Code Review. Gen Clark is leading an honor code review after the discovery of 240 cases of academic cheating during remotely-distanced academics. Most violators were 3rd and 4th class, with some upperclassmen, involving plagiarism, collaboration on exams and projects, and unauthorized materials on exams. Some cadets are being placed on probation/rehabilitation with dismissal considered for the most egregious offenders.
The honor code review is not to weaken the intent of the code but to gather input from cadets, Academy staff, and outside groups to assess the best ways to train today’s high school seniors in the purpose of the code and the true value of ethics and honesty in today’s officer corps. Not all violations are of the same magnitude and consideration should be given to the violation seriousness, cadet class and previous history, and allow for possible probation, rehabilitation, and return to duty rather than automatic dismissal for any infraction. Gen Clark testified before Congress on March 2, 2021, explaining among other things, that “We’ve had a 95 percent success rate, meaning cadets who get into that probationary status, they never have another incident or issue with the honor code,” Clark said. “We’re very proud of it. … We want our cadets to respect, not fear the honor code.” See Mar 2, 2021 article in Air Force Magazine for more.
6. Female Cadet Safety. General Clark answered a question from a graduate about his daughter’s safety at USAFA, discussing the tighter security, locks on cadet rooms, and the many cameras now placed around the cadet grounds as measures to provide better security and protection for all cadets. There are no locks in the bathrooms at this time. Teal rope senior cadets are now assigned to each squadron to provide counseling and training, sexual assault prevention and response advocacy and reporting and administrative support.
7. Hi Jeff, Hi Rich. Two final notes of interest: upon learning that his classmate Jeff Wagner, ‘86 was in the audience, greetings between them ensued. “Hi Jeff, Hi Rich. How are you buddy!” As a 4-year member of the football team as a cadet the general is an avid supporter of the Academy football team as well as all sports. Gen Clark pointed out that USAFA will play Army at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas this year on Nov 6, much to the chagrin of the Rampart Range AOG Chapter! But great for us in OK. Tickets are already available! Go HERE.

Go HERE.

2020 Holiday

Join Us on Sat, Dec 19th to Honor America's Deceased Veterans
Our Chapter wants to expand on our last year's Wreaths across America effort at USAFA's cemetery 5 Wreaths for Fallen Comrades . We want to send a group of chapter members to Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater, OK on Saturday, Dec 19th to help other volunteers in laying balsam wreaths at 1,400 military grave sites there. The date and time coincides with scores of wreath-laying events on the same time and day on Dec 19 at cemeteries across the nation, including USAFA and Arlington national Cemetery.
We need a half-dozen or more graduates to represent the chapter and travel to Stillwater and lay wreaths. Due to COVID, there is no formal ceremony or social activities this year. The wreaths will be laid in blocks throughout the cemetery and volunteers will be dispatched throughout the cemetery to lay the wreaths at the correct locations, audibly saying the veteran's name and thanking them for their service. Please help us with this memorial effort: respond here Chapter Wreath Team Volunteer to show your support for this community service effort that supports our chapter's core purpose. Most of the Chapter's Board of Directors and officers have already volunteered to go! The Oklahoma Parents Club and cadets home for the holidays have been invited to attend.
USAFA does not know the location of grave sites of all graduates outside the Academy cemetery. We know of one grad buried in OK: Capt Daniel Hardage, '59, 1st Sq, died April 28, 2016, Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Wheatland, OK. If you would like to lay a wreath at his grave site or know of any other graduates buried in our state let us know so that we may honor them. Use the email link above please.
We honored 5 graduates buried at the Academy last year with wreaths and are open to doing the same again this year. If you have someone to nominate please advise us. Use the email link above please.

USAFA Stomps Navy to Kick Off Football Season
Story by Chris Havenridge ’84, Chapter Pres
Go Falcons!
This past Saturday’s Zoom meeting was the best so far! Matt Waldron ’69 hosted with live video of the Air Force - Navy game. Live video on Zoom: he relayed (legally) from the CBS Sports network, which is a channel that many of us don’t have in our cable package, if we have cable TV at all.
I counted 9 Oklahoma-resident grads in attendance, and we were happy to see a couple of new faces in the crowd. Besides watching the game, mic’s and cameras were open on demand for those who wanted to talk, and we had fun chattering in the Zoom chat box. (Tim Laquerre '88; Howard Deunk '74; Ashlyn Paulson '18; Jim Putnam '72; Dave Wilson '74; Frank Alberga ''91; Kurt Steeby; and Chris and Matt)
Many of us were doing the traditional push ups, but we can’t prove it based solely on the claims in the chat box. :) If you missed the game, well, it was an even match. NOT. Navy’s passing game wasn’t working, and the typical Falcon ground attack was killer. You missed the end zone interception the Falcons returned for the final touchdown a minute or so later.
I, for one, am looking forward to attending watch parties again, like in 2019, when 40 or grads, family and friends got together to cheer on our team, and just have a good time with friends. We will do that again when the time is right, but until then,
LET’S DO THIS AGAIN! See you at the Army game on Zoom, November 7. Check your email for the invitation and details.
Editor's Note: Full football schedule Here; now includes 6 games with Mountain West opponents

Legacy Class of 1974 Interacts with New Class of 2024
USAFA graduate and Class President Ed Whalen, Col (Ret) class of 1974, addresses 2024 cadets at their Acceptance Parade on 10 Aug, 2020. His memorable speech is reprinted at the bottom of this story or you can hear it about 15 minutes into the video. The 1974 class is the legacy class for the 2024 class. Note the masking and social
distancing throughout the ceremony. |
The cadets have a new tradition that began with the Class of 2014. Anytime their class year is mentioned, they respond with their class motto. You can hear them yelling during Col Whalen’s speech. They were facing away from him and wearing masks so he could not hear their words which were “United We Endure”.
The outstanding basic cadet from each squadron was also recognized during the parade. Each received an endorsed copy of a Contrails during the ceremony. You can see the presentation at about the 24-minute mark in the video. The eight Contrails were dedicated to each cadet by 1974 grads Rich Bowman, Tom Hayden, Joe Brezovic, Tom Hendricks, Ted Roth, Duncan McNabb, Rich Haynie and Mike Cranford. Due to the pandemic, the Contrails were presented in absentia. The Contrails now include basic knowledge that is studied during the first three years, not just during the Doolie year. Depending on the pandemic situation the next legacy event may be the 2024 Recognition Dinner in the Spring.
Oklahoma 1974 graduates are: Dewayne Taylor, Norman; Billy Dillard, Ok City, David Wilson, Arcadia; John O'neill, Edmond; Kurt Steeby, OK City; Richard Sandwick, Ok City; Victor LaSaxon, Edmond; Dan Iken, Altus; Jesse Lane, McAlester; and norman Deunk, Enid.
Chapter Member David Wilson , '74, commented: "I watched the replay. I thought Ed did a really fine job. Don’t know how much we’ll get to personally interact with our Legacy class, but I think the idea is wonderful. In looking back, I wish I had taken more advantage of talking and working with someone who had “gone before.”
Ok 2024 cadets and hometowns are: Ella Austin, Tulsa; Dalton Carson, Ada; Cooper Conklin, OKC; Anita Cosby, Edmond; Doyle Gehring, Tulsa; Grant Govrik, Tulsa; Sydney Gunter, Lawton; Samuel Jun, OKC; Kurt Levan, Claremore; Addison Lutz, Owasso; Benjamin Robbins, Guthrie; and Luke Wells, Enid.

Chapter to Donate $100 to both the USAFA Flying Team and the Gary Sinise Foundation
The USAFA Flying Team is a nationally ranked team consisting of 27 flying members with optional member slots for those competing in ground events. For the past 20 years, the team has been coached by Bert Boyce, former B-52 commander, T-37 Instructor Pilot, and Glider Instructor Pilot. Three or four Air Force Instructor Pilots are assigned to the team to conduct upgrade training and coordinate the team's trips across the country.
Members of the team fly at least every other day during the academic year, in addition to flying every day during a 3-week summer period dedicated to airmanship. The team competes at the NIFA Region I SAFECON competition, which typically takes place in mid-October. For the past 32 years the team has won this regional competition, qualifying for the National SAFECON Competition which takes place each spring. The mission of the USAFA Flying Team is to develop officers and skilled pilots through a competitive team environment. The team also aims to represent the Air Force Academy across the country by scoring well in nationwide competitions against 78 NIFA schools. After spending time on the team, graduates have a proud record of often being selected for ENJJPT (Euro-Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training) and going on to fly our nation's frontline airframes. |

- Introductions. Members summarized their careers.
- The Board of Directors has voted to approve the addition of David Wilson to the authorized signatures on file to sign checks for the Central OK Chapter of the USAFA AOG. Adding this third person should facilitate a safe policy of two check signatures on all outgoing checks. In addition, a new Officer Position, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) was approved by the Board and is filled by Kurt Steeby
- Treasurer's Report (Jeff Wagner via email) Status of funds as of 1 Jul 2020 $1583.59. The Treasurer will see if the chapter's non-profit status can exempt us from paying $5/month checking maintenance fee.

Chapter Activities.
- Chris stated that all Chapter AOG in-person activities will be delayed due to new COVID-19 city restrictions and restaurant and bar closings. The 15 July Social Capital planned outing is cancelled. The Chapter will continue with virtual, on-line meetings.
- The Chapter will be filing state and federal forms in July to maintain our non-profit and tax-exempt status. The State of OK requires verification of income from outside sources, which the Chapter does not have. The IRS requires a yearly report of our non-profit status. Action: Jeff Wagner and Matt Waldron
- Kurt Steeby has volunteered to be the Chapter Chief Information System Security Officer (CISO). Two recent incidents highlight the need to protect the Chapter assets, to include the privacy of member’s personally identifiable information. The first incident involved an apparent attempt by someone in the Ukraine attempting to access our Chapter Gmail account and the second was some malicious software on our Chapter website. Both incidents were remediated and brought to the attention of the USAFA AOG. Matt Waldron will be moving the Chapter’s personal Gmail account to a Google GSuite account to provide extra security. In addition, Two-Factor Authentication was implemented for current and future Chapter Gmail to enhance security.
USAFA AOG Selects Us for Distinguished Chapter Status for Past Year! Earned Chapter Flag!
Central OK Chapter USAFA AOG selected for Distinguished Chapter (DC)! We have received unofficial word from the AOG that our early nomination package and first year program are outstanding! We scored 6,250 points, not including 9 additional scoring activities beyond the space allowed on the form when only 2,000 points were needed. From Karina Ross, AOG Director of Constituent Relations, "Thank you for your submission, to say I am impressed with you all is an understatement. Your efforts have definitely been recognized and I could not be more excited to get your DC flag made."
Formal announcement will be made at Virtual President's Conference in August

Review of AOG/USAFA Announcements An excerpt from Lt Gen Silveria May 12 letter Superintendent's letter to the Parents of the Class of 2024 describing the quarantine process for In-processing Day for BCT:
"We will remain vigilant against the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks, social distancing and following other protocols proscribed by the Center for Disease Control and the Department of Defense. ......Details regarding In-Processing Day and Basic Cadet Training are still being finalized in order to ensure that we are taking every possible precaution to mitigate health risks, and we will communicate those updates with you and your appointee. The numbers of COVID-19 cases on our campus have been extremely low, and we are continuing to work closely with our exceptional medical team to maintain this trend. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of your appointee taking responsibility for his or her health and strength during this unprecedented time. Choices they make now could have a lasting impact on their future. Upon arrival, each basic cadet will be tested for COVID- 19, then enter a 14-day period where each basic cadet and his or her roommate will undergo online training, learn Air Force customs and courtesies, and basic marching movements with limited exposure to others while we monitor their health. At the end of:he 14-day period they will be tested again before beginning more rigorous basic training activities within their 30-person flight." - Dues. Members discussed whether dues should be optional for 2020 because of a lack of chapter activities. It was determined that dues should be collected to minimize the amount of money that may need to be collected separately for chapter activities. The mandatory dues will be half of last year’s dues and are not deemed exorbitantly high for grads to show their commitment. Non-payers lose regular membership and its benefits. Dues will be $25 for graduates before 2000 and $10 for graduates in years 2000-2005. No dues for more recent grads. Dues can be paid on the Chapter web site Here or by mailing a check to Jeff Wagner, Treasurer, 550 S. Texas Ave, Ok City, OK, 73130.
- Elections for new Board directors and Chapter officers.
- Current Board members are valid for another year and do not require a vote. John Justice ’65 was added as a new and 5th Board member.
- Officer position changes: David Wilson moves from Secretary to Vice President, Matt Waldron moves from Vice President to the new position Network Coordinator, and Kurt Steeby assumes the office of Secretary. All actions approved by the board. Jeff Wagner remains as Treasurer and Lee Curtis as Parents Club coordinator.
- Matt stated that all AOG activities have been delayed due to COVID-19. The members discussed delaying the Founders Day event again from Aug 1 to later this year; however, due to the uncertainty of social distancing, USAF travel bans and a desire to have an event closer to the actual founders day, it was decided to try to reschedule Founders Day to the Spring of 2021. Matt will contact AOG who is providing support personnel and handling payment to negotiate this with Top Golf.
- Members also discussed resuming in-person chapter activities [meetings] depending on Oklahoma’s phased reopening of businesses and member’s personal desires. There is a possibility of having a combination of in-person and virtual, on-line meetings. The Board decided to take a wait and see approach and Chris suggested that we consider an outdoor bag lunch gathering.
- Members discussed the new chapter initiative from Dave Wilson to give Oklahoma USAFA cadets and recent grads orientation flights. AOG provided us a High-Risk Assessment Form for cadet signature and AOC approval. There is further coordination in progress to address hold-harmless release of liability forms for cadets/families to sign to protect the AOG, Academy or chapter and members from suit. It is expected that COVID issues will be a concern with flying also and liability protection and personal protection are being evaluated here also. Matt and Dave are continuing to work these issues and Matt will coordinate further with AOG on what is necessary to best protect all parties.
- Discussed Chapter Bylaws: Modifications to the bylaws were discussed and approved by the Board of Directors. The new bylaws can be found at https://www.centralok.usafachapters.org/chapter-by-laws.html with changes that were approved marked in cyan.
- The Chapter needs to file state and federal forms in July to maintain our non-profit and tax-exempt status. Treasurer and Network Coordinator will accomplish.

3. Treasurer Jeff Wagner weighed in with a funds available total of just over $500 dollars, some of which will cover member’s costs for Founder’s Day. Checking account is now established at FNB.
4. Several ideas came forward from the 11 attendees on community service and chapter event ideas for the future. A Chapter blood donation day after Founder’s Day was decided upon. Other ideas were Mission Norman for Xmas gifts for the needy, St Jude’s Cancer Hospital telethon call takers, a Wilshire Gun shooting afternoon, supporting the Memorial Marathon and a running event for the Chapter, a winery social, attending a Dodger baseball game, picnic and softball afternoon, and a golf event with the S. Texas Chapter of the AOG at Wind Star. The winery social is an idea that emerged from the hunt for a Founder’s Day venue from member Jim Putnam and might be a good choice for the near future. Another Founder’s Day idea from Frank Alberga, is Iron Star BBQ for a luncheon or other event.
5. Dave Wilson said we needed a way to get the details of these ideas recorded and sponsored by members. Well, here it is: click on this link and fill out the form for your community service or Chapter activity. Fill Out a Chapter Event Proposal Form

Air Force Academy Wrestling Wins 3 Matches but Lose Overall to Sooners 24 - 10 in Valentine's Evening Duel
Chapter members Matt Waldron and Dave Wilson watched an exciting dual wrestling meet -- Air Force at OU -- yesterday at McCasland Field House in Norman, OK. They got a lot of attention with their cries of Go Falcons! amidst a friendly but knowledgeable and partisan crowd of Sooner fans. The Academy wrestling team is a member of the Big Twelve wrestling conference and has come to Stillwater and Norman for meets in the last 2 weeks and will compete at the Big 12 Championships in Tulsa, OK March 7th and 8th. AF had a couple big highlights, including freshman Dylan Martinez knocking off the No. 31 ranked wrestler at 149 lbs., as part of their three bout wins. Sophomore 165 pounder Vincent Dolce won the first dual match of his career, in major decision form. Sophomore heavyweight Kayne Hutchison won a hard fought 8-7 decision win to make it 10-7 match at the midway point. It was Hutchison's third straight dual win and his sixth dual win on the season.
7th Chapter Luncheon, 23 Jan 2020
(Attended by 10 at All American DinerFrank Alberga, Curt Steeby, Chris Havenridge, Matt Waldron, David Wilson, John Cerra, Jim Putnam, Jim Craig, John Justice, Lee Curtis)
President's note: A chapter in another state calls their lunch meetings the "Noon Meal Formation". I think we should steal that idea! -CH.
We wasted no time at the meeting, but got right to work ordering our food and eating! Then, with mouths full, we slowly began to discuss the business of the day.
Save the date for Founders Day, April 4, 2020! Frank Alberga ’91 is called upon to lead the committee, stay tuned for details. We already have almost 40 responding they are interested. Some Chapter members did not respond "Might Attend" on the recent email announcing plans. Please do so if so!
All-Service Academy Cadet Ball. Lee Curtis gave us a summary of the Academy Dance over the Christmas break; some 185 people were in attendance of which 31 were cadets/midshipmen from the various academies. All had a good time, and pictures are available on our website. Three of our members attended: Frank ’91, Lee ’85, and Jeff ’86 with their lovely dates. See the awesome pics below this entry.
Treasurer Update. Matt provided a treasurer’s report; as our Treasurer was vacationing in Absentia). Our checking account is nearly up and running. Any checks you may have written but haven’t been cashed yet; standby for them to clear soon. We currently have about $500 available for community projects and chapter events.
Football. Though many were out and about, we did have two members get together to watch the Falcons down Washington; Chris Havenridge ’84 and Lee Curtis ’85 plus 3 family and friends. Better yet, Frank Alberga ’91 and Renee traveled to Phoenix to attend the Cheez-It bowl and cheer the Falcons on real time! Now that’s spirit! We will continue to advertise and plan for group get-togethers to watch and cheer on the Falcons.
Get Togethers. Our next social event will be the Thunder game on 21 February. OKC will be hosing (I meant hosting, but what the heck!) Denver. We will gather at the Deep Deuce for a pre-game lubrication; followed by bussing to and from the event. Please, purchase your own tickets; next time we hope to have enough attendees to buy our tickets in bulk! Please sign up on the web page at https://www.centralok.usafachapters.org/feb-2020-thunder-game.html Come join us at the Deep Deuce for a beer whether you go to the game or not.
Tulsa Grads. We are looking to help initiate another Chapter independent chapter in the Tulsa area. I’ve already reached out to a ’92 grad in Tulsa. If you know anyone “back East,” or would like to contact someone, I’m sure we can find someone for you to talk to. AOG may appoint an Ambassador as central point of contact for cities with Grad populations.
Service Before Self. The Academy is promoting a program for community service based on the core value: “Service Before Self.” The goal is to serve your community for at least 65 minutes between now and 7/10/2020. Report on the AOG webpage, (https://www.usafa.org/servicebeforeself) and “assign” your time to a particular cadet squadron. Each month the squadron receives a cash reward for their own use. I suggested to reach out to one of the JROTC or ROTC units in the local area to offer your services as a “Guest instructor” for a class or two. You could give briefing on one of the core values, Code of conduct, your career or career path, or whatever the Senior Instructor would like you to do. Great opportunity for you to interact with our future leaders, wonderful opportunity for them to learn from your experiences, and it’s a nice break for the instructor! Jim Putnam suggested the EAA as an opportunity; whether you have a plane or want to help with ground logistics.
Mishap Reported. One very important point: best wishes out to Katie Givens. She fell and broke a bone. Unfortunately, it was one of hers and not one of Walt’s '59, We sent a card.

- We are looking for ideas for future events; including family events, such as a picnic at the new downtown park, Scissortail Park. Since the MAPS project was first initiated back in the early 1990’s, OKC has transformed from a mid-west “Cowtown” to a destination for many family and adult activities. Bricktown, Myriad Gardens, the Riverwalk, and Riversport are just a few of the many opportunities to share and enjoy. Let’s get out and see our city!

Chapter Members Attend All Academy Military Ball
The USAFA Oklahoma Parents Club hosted the annual All-Academy Military Ball Dec 29, 2019 at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. This annual event invites cadets and midshipmen and their families from each of the service academies (including Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine Academy) to attend a formal military ball to promote comradery and esprit d’ corps for our future officers from Oklahoma. Guest speaker was the Honorable Tom Cole of Oklahoma’s 4th Congressional District. Our chapter donated $150 to the Parents Club and sat together at a table at the event. Member Lee Curtis, chapter liaison to the Parents Club, helped organize preparation for the Ball. Three members and their partners are shown below.

Register for Military Ball Here: http://www.okallacademiesball.com
Another great lunch at the All-American Diner in Midwest City! We “chose wisely grasshoppers” to make this our meeting place. We had eight members present: Senior Member Mike Givens, Board members President Chris Havenridge, Vice President Matt Waldron, Kurt Steeby and Frank Alberga, Secretary David Wilson, John Justice, and Mick Harper.
Agenda: The Cadet Ball, Treasurer’s Report, Non-profit and Tax Status of our Association,Report on Holiday Service projects, USAFA Football, New business
Cadet Ball. We have four members and spouses confirmed (and five more probable’s) to attend the Annual Cadet Ball on Dec 29th at the Oklahoma City Country Club. There is room for more; so, if you’ll be in town, think about joining us at the Chapter table being organized by Lee Curtis. Register above by Dec 13.
Money & Growth. We currently have $500 in our account from dues collection. Despite four previous members bowing out for personal reasons, we have 31 members and growing -- actively participating in both community service (including donations totaling $350 to Tinker AFB Airmen and Family Readiness Center and USAFA parents club) and social activities.
Chapter Structure. Thanks to the efforts of Jeff Wagner and Matt Waldron, we are well along in achieving our goal as a non-profit/non-taxable organization at the state and federal levels. We are registering as a state not for profit association and federal IRC 501(c)(19), which is a “military society.” Our checking account should be up by the end of the year.
Football Update. Though not known at the time of our meeting, the Falcons (now 9-2) won on Saturday against New Mexico. That puts us in the running for the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque Dec 21 (Saturday) with a 1 pm kickoff, or the Armed Forces Bowl in Ft. Worth on January 4th (Saturday) with a 10:30 scheduled kickoff. If that’s the case, we will look at planning a “road trip,” depending on interest.
New business. We discussed planning our Founder’s Day event for 2020, Saturday, April 4th.

Air Force Goal Line Stand Downs Army 17 - 13
|
Over 30 grads and friends met at Garage Beers and Burgers in Del City Saturday to watch the Air Force - Army traditional annual game. Underdog Army made a strong effort to steal the game but AF stopped Army on the goal line with seconds left in the game to win a thriller. Several Army alumni attended and two possible USAF Academy candidates were there with parents. Three new members joined our ranks:
Ashlyn Paulson '18, Aaron Troxell '91, and John Laugerman '70. |
Fifth Chapter Meeting 24 OctMembers present were Senior Member Mike Givens, Board members President Chris Havenridge and Vice President Matt Waldron, Board Member Kurt Steeby, Treasurer Jeff Wagner, Secretary David Wilson, Lance Reynolds, John Justice, Parents Club liaison Lee Curtis and Ron Murray who represented the chapter at the USAFA President’s Conference in August.
Great lunch at the All-American Diner in Midwest City! We plan to make this our permanent monthly luncheon place. Our guest of honor was Maj (RES) Alicia Cramer. Alicia is a former C-17 driver and a USAFA IP in the Cirrus aircraft and IP in the T-1 at Vance AFB. She and her husband reside in OKC; (he’s an OSU grad and a veterinarian). Alicia is currently one of the Oklahoma Admissions Liaison Officers (ALO) for USAFA and will soon become the state ALO coordinator, supporting all interested applicants to the Air Force Academy. She plans to use our chapter personnel to accompany her on some of her high school and other speaking engagements. Lee Curtis started business by informing us of the Annual All Academy Military Ball (29 DEC) at the OKC Country Club. He needs a JROTC Color Guard. He’ll be working with Col (RET) Kevin Jones, ’79, and Chief Walt Kula at Choctaw HS. Matt Waldron made a motion to donate $50 from the Chapter toward the ball and members spontaneously ponied up an additional $100. The total of $150 will be donated to the ball organizers. Depending on how many members want to attend we may have a “chapter table” (@$60/seat), as well. See the adjacent story for more info on the ball and how to sign up. Jeff Wagner gave us a Treasurer’s report: we have $520 (before today’s contributions; more later). He is researching for an application to manage our membership and accounting and setting up a chapter bank account. Chris Havenridge reported on the results of the By-Laws (Unanimously Approved by 30 voting members) and dues going forward starting in JUN 2020: old folks (graduated before 2000) -$50/yr; younger ones (graduated 2000-2005) $25/ year, and no dues for young’uns (later graduates). This was approved by 23 members; 7 members also voted for $100/$50, $40/$20 or donations only. The By Laws specify that Donations above dues are also gladly accepted. The final subject was a military service project. Frank Alberga and Matt Waldron researched the possibilities. Frank will ally us with Air Force Association holiday giving programs and also has a query into Tinker Sgt Major for holiday assistance needs. Matt contacted the Tinker AFB Airman & Family Readiness Center. You can help with the Tinker Airmen Thanksgiving dinner at the base chapel (Dining Hall is closed for renovations). The dinner is being sponsored by the civilian Home Away from Home organization. Email the chapter if interested. The Readiness Center is also in need of funds for Thansgiving turkeys and food pantry needs. The Chapter voted to donate $200. FOOTBALL: USAFA vs Army: Sat, Nov 2, at Garage Beers & Burgers (I-40 and Sooner Rd), kickoff 2:30, You are also invited to West Point Society's Watch Party at Industry Gastro Pub, 2800 NW 140th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73120 and they to our party as well! |

Navy Overcomes Air Force 34 to 25 in Hard Faught Game, 5 Oct 2019
Story by Dave Wilson '84 (Secretary and Watch Party Officer), Photos by Dave Wilson and Chris Havenridge '84 (President); Web Design by Matt Waldron (Vice President)
A very exciting game with Navy! Very enjoyable, up until the last 30 seconds when Navy pulled of a late drive to the end zone. Though we were a little short on the score, we were long on participation with over 25 grads and spouses in attendance from our ’59 grad (Mike Givens) to one from the Class 2018 (Ashlyn Paulson). Navy made a very nice showing with CMDR. David Gardner (VQ-4/CC) and about ten of his seamen and spouses. Despite OU fans watching a game before us and a “pub crawl” group coming in soon after, the staff at Deep Deuce did a great job of serving us. Kudos to Sabra Dake and her staff.
Fourth Chapter Meeting Navy: We'll know how to
find you at your Watch Party
1. Santa Fe Cattle Co. 26 Sep 19: Steeby, Alberga, Wilson, Cerra, Givens, Justice, Maltz, Waldron, Havenridge
2. Chapter By Laws were approved and President Chris Havenridge appointed Frank Alberga, Kurt Steeby, and Matt Waldron to join him as members of the Board of Directors. Matt Waldron was confirmed as Vice President, Dave Wilson as Secretary and Jeff Wagner as Treasurer. The board elected Chris Havenridge as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
3. The Fiscal year for the chapter was set to July 1 to June 30 to match the AOG calendar. The dues for the Fiscal year ending June 30, 2020 for regular graduate chapter members was set at $10 for those graduating in 2010 and earlier and free for later graduates. Several members paid dues at the meeting. Dues are due to the Treasurer, Jeff Wagner, by Oct 31. Jeff will be contacting members who owe dues. Payment of dues is required to maintain membership. Higher dues were set for the next fiscal year starting June 30 and will be due June 15, 2020, but still free for 2009 and later grads. However, the board of directors will be discussing dues, and possibly the maximum dues will be set at $50 for next fiscal year, rather than the $100 dollars discussed at the meeting. Members will be advised in more detail of the Board's recommendation in the near future.
4. The Navy Watch Party details have been finalized by Dave Wilson: patio of Deep Deuce Grill, 307 NE 2nd St near Bricktown, kickoff 2:30 pm, Sat, Oct 5. Wives/dates welcome. Navy challenged to show up! their response to our invite picture upper right. It was decided the last football watch Party would be Army.
5. It was decided to hold a Chapter Meet & Greet for members, non-members we know about, and other graduates on our AOG 50-mile spreadsheet. A Saturday beer-tasting event was selected to appeal to new and older grads in the area. 26 Oct was picked for the event but the Army game is Nov 2 so the date has been switched to Oct 19, Stand by for updates.
6. Frank Alberga volunteered to research possible public/veteran service projects for the chapter and report back with a recommendation.
7. New member Conan Maltz '19 found a way to email the 40 Oklahoma cadets at USAFA and is drafting an email to let them know about our chapter.
8. Maj Alicia Cramer, our Academy LO will be our guest speaker next meeting, members can accompany her on Academy talks to answer questions. The Nov meeting has been moved to Thurs, 21 Nov because of Thanksgiving. There will be no Dec meeting.
9. Sat April 4, 2020 has been picked as our next Founder's Day celebration. We are looking for a local guest speaker, perhaps from Tinker AFB.

Ops AF helped us to better understand how complicated the Air Force machine is. It is amazing to see how many people go into making things work. People really are our greatest asset.
Most of us understood beforehand that support and operational functions had a purpose but did not know exactly what that purpose was. After going on this trip, we have developed a better picture of the big Air Force and how its components work together to get the mission done. Flying missions may seem to be the biggest part of the Air Force from the outside, but on Ops AF we saw that they are only the tip of the iceberg. Some of the most important things that I got from Ops AF were getting experience with enlisted members and seeing how important all of the different AFSCs are in the big picture. For example, I gained a lot of respect for maintainers that will be making sure my plane works well if I become a pilot. I also learned much about how to act as a new 2Lt in a unit. I learned that most second lieutenants have very little idea what they are doing when they first show up. As a 2Lt, you have to be eager to go out and immerse yourself in the squadron, getting to know people and being mentored by officers above you. You need to be a sponge and soak up all the knowledge you can get from those around you. With all of that, be the best you can be at your job; become an expert at it. We all heard this kind of advice from many different people, from new to senior officers as well as senior NCOs. I think it is safe to say that the group of us had a great time learning at Tinker AFB. Without a doubt we all learned some important things that may help us make more educated decisions about our AFSCs as well as become better 2Lts once we graduate.

Cadet Flint Credits Tinker Trainers: Some of the officers that were most influential to us on the trip were Maj Mobley, 1Lt Davis (project officers), Brigadier General Hill '91 (ALC Complex CC), and Col Taylor (72 ABGp base vice CC). Maj Mobley and 1Lt Davis did a great job showing our group around and answering our endless questions. General Hill met us during the day and answered some questions, as well as inviting us over for dinner where we asked plenty more questions and were told some great stories about Air Force life. Col Taylor sat down with us one morning and gave some great tips for being an AF officer in general and even gave us a handout that he has been working on for his entire career with those tips and tricks. Without a doubt that handout will prove to be useful at least once when I am an officer, so I am grateful for that. |

About 1200 men and women will take the Oath of Allegiance shortly after arriving at the Academy ... support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic...
After getting uniforms, haircuts and assignments the trainees will be transformed from civilians into basic cadets through concentrated military, physical and weapons training, uniform and dorm inspections and marching drills. They will also receive instruction in honor and ethics, military justice and Air Force's core values: "Integrity First," "Service Before Self," and "Excellence in All We Do.” |
